
As the attack begins, audiences see an overhead shot of the detective reaching the top of the stairs and Mother running out to stab him. Consider the scene in Psycho (1960) when Mother murders detective Arbogast. The director was aware of the way that abrupt changes in camera positioning could evoke an emotional response. He loved point of view shots, which showed a shot of the actor and then cut to a shot of what the actor was looking at in order to convey what the actor is looking at pretty much, the Kuleshov effect. To Hitchcock, the conversations in his films were not important. His cameo appearances in his own films, as well as his interviews, film trailers and the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1962-65), made him an iconic figure of the 20 th century. His works became prominent for their depictions of violence, although many of his plots merely functioned as decoys meant to serve as a tool for understanding complex psychological characters.


After arriving in Hollywood in 1939, Hitchcock made his first American film Rebecca (1940) which won him an Academy Award for Best Picture. Before establishing international success and prestige in Hollywood, he was a successful director in England with movies such as The Lady Vanishes (1938), The 39 Steps (1935), and Secret Agent (1936).

Hitchcock influenced such great directors as François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol and Brian de Palma. Born in 1899 in London, Alfred Hitchcock was no doubt considered to be the magician of suspense.
